The Swine Flu

It is the Swine Flu which is a disease of the respiratory tract caused by influenza viruses that belong to the family of (Orthomeksoveriday), which has mostly affected pigs. This type of virus causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs regularly in a number of countries including the United States, Mexico, Canada, South America, Europe, and East Asia. And till 2009 six viruses of Swine Flu have been identified which are influenza virus C, H1N1, H1N2, H3N1, H3N2 and H2N3.

The transmission of swine influenza virus to humans was relatively rare but the probability of transmission of swine influenza virus from pigs to humans has increased recently as a result of the genetic mutations that have occurred. Since the mid-twentieth century fifty human cases of swine influenza virus were recorded, and usually the symptoms of infection are similar to the symptoms of common flu like sore throat, high fever, fatigue, muscle pain, cough, and headache.

History of the Disease

Some scientists speculate that the first plague of swine flu spread among humans happened in 1918, as it had been proven that pigs were infected along with humans. The most widespread virus of Swine Flu is H1N1 virus, and is one of the viruses that descended from influenza plague of 1918. But the transmission of the virus from pigs to humans was rare where only 12 cases were recorded in the United States since 2005.

In September 1988 swine flu infection led to the death of a pregnant woman in the state of Wisconsin, USA, in addition to hundreds of infections. The woman was infected after her visit to a place with pigs, where it was found that the infection rates between those pigs were 76%, and the husband of the deceased woman was also infected but recovered later.

On August 20, 2007 the Department of Agriculture in the Philippines, warned of the spread of Epizootic ((in English: epizootic) refers to the spread of some infectious disease within a bulk of one animal species or more, with rates even more than usual average in the region concerned, and can be compared to the concept of the plague among humans.) The death rate of pigs reached 10%.

The Causing Virus

Viruses known to cause symptoms of influenza in pigs are influenza virus A and C, and virus A is more common among pigs. Although the ability of each of viruses A and C to infect humans but serological species that infect humans are different from those affecting pigs. And the virus usually does not move between the various living species unless the virus is restructured, then the virus could move between humans, pigs, and birds.

Influenza Virus A

The virus infects humans, pigs, and birds; currently four sub-types of influenza virus A were recognized and isolated in pigs: H1N1, H1N2, H3N2, H3N1.
However, most influenza viruses isolated - during the infection of 2009 - from pigs were viruses H1N1. Classical swine influenza viruses (influenza virus type H1N1) were isolated for the first time from a pig in 1930.

Influenza Virus C

Influenza virus C infects both humans and pigs only, but it is rare among humans due to the lack of genetic diversity. The virus was spread in Japan in 1996 and 1998 and in California.

Transmission to People

Workers in the field of pig breeding and care are the most vulnerable to the disease. Swine influenza viruses infect humans when communication occurs between people and infected pigs. Infections occur also when contaminated objects are transmitted from people to pigs. Pigs can be infected by human influenza or avian influenza. When influenza viruses of various kinds infect pigs, they can be mixed inside the pig's body and blend into new viruses. Pigs can again transmit modified viruses to humans and this can be transferred from one person to another; it is believed that transmissible between humans occur in the same way of seasonal influenza by touching something which contains the influenza viruses and then touching the mouth or nose and through coughing and sneezing.

Symptoms in Pigs

Infection in pigs causes high temperature, coughing, sneezing and breathing problems and lack of appetite, and in some cases infection may lead to abortion. Despite the low death rate (1-4%), but the infection leads to losing weight at an average of 12 pounds within 3 to 4 weeks, causing financial loss to farmers.

Symptoms in Humans

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the swine flu symptoms in humans are similar to that of seasonal influenza and are represented by a sudden increase in temperature and a cough, pain in muscles and severe fatigue. It seems that this new strain causes more diarrheas and vomiting than normal influenza. One can not differentiate between common influenza and swine flu except through laboratory test that determines the type of virus. That is why the CDC urged doctors in the United States to put swine influenza within the differential diagnosis for all patients with symptoms of influenza and who have been in contact with a person infected with swine flu or had been in one of the USA states infected with the flu.

Prevention of Infection Transmission from Pigs

The possibility of human infection from pigs is currently high (1233 cases were recorded since the mid-3 months), but farmers and those who are in contact with pigs are advised to use nose and mouth masks to prevent infection. Farmers are also advised to receive the vaccine against swine flu.

By being afraid of it or trust in God, the Lord of the Worlds

On the subject of swine flu the key is your habits and attitude in dealing with the cough or sneeze or even how to spit... And the way to care for and clean hands. Ordinary things can be done by each individual.... Especially if performed ritual ablution five times a day or more ... especially if cleaned his hands and his teeth and nose by inhalation, rinsing the mouth, and using the siwaak... And keep clean his clothes, his place of eating, and his food...

In the case of avian flu... The treatment of the disease is difficult if a case occurred, whereas in the case of swine flu treatment is easy... on one condition... the beginning of treatment early... The earlier the treatment the more chances of recovery by 98%, if God wills

No vaccine for swine flu... The experts consider that the creation of such a vaccine could take several months, but danger and fear is not in the time to be created (after 6 months, experts said), the real problem may be how to produce it at a high level in the world.

The Messenger of Allah peace be upon him taught us how to deal with plagues and diseases

Pureness is a condition of Faith (means the human must be pure and clean in his clothing and course and food, and behavior with people), that is half the faith ... it is considered the most important law and the most important measure of prevention from this disease.

Everyone has to know the measures of prevention first and speedy treatment second... They are the two determining factors in maintaining a person's life, if God wills.

In case of spread of the disease or its appearance in a city or a place... inhabitants of that place must not leave it... So as not to be the cause of the disease spread (which is the Prophet's command peace be upon him to us in the case of plague - the name of the epidemic - not to enter the town or city or leave it ... This action banned the travel from and to Mexico and limited the virus there.

Faith in God and everyone has to know that whatever infected him may not have missed him and what missed him may not have happened to him... And not a lot of talk and search in the web ... and non-reporting of rumors and each one focuses on the work which he wants to meet God with... So that faith lines up with good work... This can be the most important thing... Where you find a lot of time wasted in talk and not making any effort to have everyone work for the benefit of himself and the benefit of the people around him (every soul will face death). Some people think if a particular disease or plague existed he will suffer from it, and this is the reason for the limited number of arrivals to Mecca during the pilgrimage season, or one may think he will suffer from certain complications which is untrue... Know that God is merciful and any disease or plague is the result of people's sins and God wants for them success and wellbeing...

Inside the family, the child must learn how to keep his hands clean and how to follow the teachings of religion in maintaining his purity and not harming others... Both in the case of sneezing or coughing... And to inform his parents of any rise in temperature... Or inform his school (which may not occur as a result closing schools in case of spread of any plague, may God bless you and grant you pardon and wellness). The mother and child must maintain personal cleanness... especially outside the home... which is most important.

Breathing and using mouth and nose protector which prevents catching the virus through the air... Something that stresses the need to keep air conditioners clean... Knowing that the swine flu virus is very, very weak and a little bit of clean water may eliminate the flu... As well as some ordinary soap may kill the virus... In addition to disinfectants or perfumes.

The pig is the developer of animal viruses... Due to eating dirt even if it was in a clean environment... He eats his own dirt... Which is not done by any other animal.

There is no need to fear or panic... but to depend on God... Taking into consideration all the beneficial reasons... And fully worship God... Frequent ablution for God also... And to maintain purity as much as possible... It is the surest and most effective way to maintain your health against this flu.

Avoid traffic places and places of garbage or dirt, and avoid exposure to any person's cough or sneeze or shaking hands in public areas... which is important... and most importantly not to travel to or from any place in which this disease occurred.

In the case of travel in various airports... Please take extreme caution... And put masks on the face... And sterilize hands as much as possible... and not touching airport facilities by hands unless sterilizing them after this... And if the spread of the disease is strong... Please postpone travel from any country in which a disease is epidemic... As well as to any country in which a disease is epidemic... It is the most important and most effective way.
